How Portavi reads your GitHub projects
Nothing to restructure: each project is read through the fields it already has.
Your project’s own fields
Issues, pull requests and draft issues come across with the project’s Status field: its first option counts as to do, its last as done, the rest as in progress.
Iterations or milestones as sprints
A Scrum project takes its sprints from an iteration field or the issues’ milestones, with story points from a number field.
Phases from milestones, issues or labels
A Waterfall project takes its phases from milestones, top-level issues with their sub-issues, or labels, or you map them by hand. Dates come from Start date and Target date fields, or the milestone’s due date.

What Portavi adds on top
One view of the portfolio
Every project rolls up to on track, at risk or delayed, whether it lives in GitHub Projects or another tool you connect.
A full RAID log
Risks, assumptions, issues and dependencies for every project and program, beside the GitHub Projects work they concern.
Capacity across tools
Everyone’s open work in one view, including people whose work is split between GitHub Projects and another tool.
Connecting GitHub Projects
- A PMO manager selects Connect on GitHub Projects in Portavi’s Integrations page.
- Portavi is a GitHub App. If it isn’t installed on your organization yet, GitHub shows its install page next, for an organization owner to approve.
- Create a project in Portavi, pick the GitHub project, and choose how it runs: Scrum, Kanban, Waterfall or Milestone.
Portavi syncs straight away, then on a schedule you set, as often as hourly within working hours, and whenever you select Resync. It reads up to 1,000 tasks per project.
Questions
- Does Portavi change anything in GitHub Projects?
- No. It asks GitHub Projects for read-only access and never creates, edits or moves anything there.
- Does everyone on GitHub Projects need a Portavi account?
- No. Their work syncs from GitHub Projects. Portavi seats are for the people running the work, and executives read for free.
- Can I connect GitHub Projects alongside other tools?
- Yes. Starter connects two tools and Growth any number, and every project reports the same way whichever tool it lives in.
- Who needs to install the GitHub App?
- An organization owner. If you aren’t one, GitHub sends the owner a request, and you can connect once they approve it.
